Lorraine Bourque: An Inspiration to All

This International Women’s Day, we sat down with Pavillon Gallant, Faubourg du Mascaret resident, Lorraine Bourque, who shared her inspiring story that perfectly aligns with this year’s theme “Give to Gain”. Give to Gain is meant to encourage generosity, collaboration, and intentional investment to accelerate gender equality.
How have you contributed to your community?
Lorraine has always felt blessed by her community’s support, and throughout her life, she has made it a priority to give back in meaningful ways. Before retiring, Lorraine worked as a teacher in New Brunswick schools and a professor at university, a career that is one of the most impactful ways to support a community and shape the next generation of leaders. Her goal as an educator was to foster growth, provide guidance, and have a positive influence on each person she was in contact with.
Building self-esteem has always been especially important to Lorraine. She made it a personal mission to uplift those around her, including students, colleagues, and community members, encouraging them to recognize their strengths and build confidence. Her dedication to education also allowed her to travel to many French-speaking regions, including Belgium, France, Ottawa, and Quebec, where she shared her extensive knowledge and passion for learning.
Have you experienced community support? If so, how was it helpful?
Lorraine taught people of all ages, and she has been touched by those who approach her years later to express their gratitude, many of them even sharing that she was their favourite teacher.
An important moment of support came during a sabbatical that allowed her to study in Ottawa. It was there that a professor encouraged her to pursue a doctorate in education. Although this was not part of her initial plans, encouragement from friends and a timely recommendation helped her secure a scholarship. This opportunity allowed her to advance her career while strengthening her ties to the community.
Can you share an example of a woman who inspired you, and how she shaped who you are today?
Lorraine expressed deep gratitude for the many remarkable and supportive women who have influenced her life, highlighting two very special friends of hers.
The first was Corinne Gallant, who was deeply involved in philosophy and the feminist movement. An activist from the very beginning, Corinne never hesitated to voice her opinion and defend the cause of those who too often did not receive their fair share. Mrs. Gallant was also the driving force behind the interest in constructing the type of building that Pavillon Gallant would become at Faubourg du Mascaret.
Another influential woman was Huberte Gautreau, who was a close friend. In addition to her significant contributions in New Brunswick, Huberte worked in several countries in Africa and Latin America. Defending the rights of women and the most disadvantaged members of society, as well as her commitment to the environment, were at the heart of her actions. What was remarkable about Huberte was her ability to convince many of the people she came into contact with to join her in her cause. Lorraine spoke emotionally about these women, paying tribute to their memory.
Lastly, what advice would you give to the next generation of women?
Lorraine emphasized the importance of lifelong learning, reminding us that there is always more to know, especially from younger generations. She encouraged young people to believe in themselves, stay open to possibilities, and never underestimate their own potential.
She also highlighted the value of contributing to community life, noting that when we give, others give in return. Her final reminder was simple but powerful: keep challenging ourselves, because the effort we invest in life makes all the difference.
A heartfelt thank you to Lorraine for taking the time to share her insights and experiences. She is, in every respect, exceptionally inspiring and truly worthy of admiration.
Happy International Women’s Day!
