This \u202fInternational Women\u2019s Day, we\u202fsat down\u202fwith\u202fPavillon Gallant, Faubourg du Mascaret resident, Lorraine Bourque,\u202fwho shared\u202fher inspiring story that perfectly aligns with this year\u2019s theme \u201cGive to Gain\u201d.\u202fGive to Gain\u202fis meant to encourage generosity, collaboration, and intentional investment to accelerate gender equality<\/span>.<\/span>\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n How have you contributed to your community?<\/span><\/b>\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Lorraine has always felt blessed by her community\u2019s support,\u202fand throughout her life,\u202fshe\u202fhas made it a priority to give back in meaningful ways. Before retiring, Lorraine worked as a teacher\u00a0in New Brunswick schools and a professor at university, a career that is one of the most impactful ways to support a community and shape the next generation of leaders. Her goal as an educator was to foster growth, provide guidance, and have a positive influence on each\u00a0person\u00a0she\u00a0was in contact with.<\/span>\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Building self-esteem has always been especially important to Lorraine. She made it a personal mission to uplift those around her,\u202fincluding\u202fstudents, colleagues, and community members,\u202fencouraging them to recognize their strengths and build confidence. Her dedication to education also\u202fallowed her\u202fto travel to many French-speaking regions, including Belgium, France, Ottawa, and Quebec, where she shared her extensive knowledge and passion for learning.<\/span>\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Have you experienced community support? If so, how was it helpful?<\/span><\/b>\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Lorraine\u202ftaught\u202fpeople\u00a0of all\u202fages,\u202fand\u202fshe\u202fhas been touched by those\u00a0who\u00a0approach her years later to express their gratitude, many\u00a0of them\u00a0even sharing that she was their\u202ffavourite\u202fteacher.<\/span>\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n An important moment of support came during a sabbatical that allowed her to study in Ottawa. It was there that a professor encouraged her to pursue a doctorate in education. Although this was not part of her\u00a0initial\u00a0plans, encouragement from friends and\u00a0a timely\u00a0recommendation helped her secure a scholarship. This opportunity allowed her to advance her career while strengthening her ties\u00a0to\u00a0the community.<\/span>\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Can you share an example of a woman who inspired you, and how she shaped who you are today?<\/span><\/b>\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Lorraine expressed deep gratitude for the many remarkable and supportive women who have influenced her life, highlighting\u202ftwo\u202fvery special\u202ffriends of hers.<\/span>\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The first was\u202f<\/span>Corinne Gallant<\/span><\/b>, who was deeply involved in philosophy and the feminist movement.\u00a0An activist from the very beginning, Corinne never hesitated to voice her opinion and defend the cause of those who too often did not receive their fair share. Mrs.\u00a0Gallant was also the driving force behind the interest in constructing the type of building that\u00a0Pavillon\u00a0Gallant would become\u00a0at\u00a0Faubourg du\u00a0Mascaret.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Another influential woman was\u202f<\/span>Huberte\u202fGautreau<\/span><\/b>,\u00a0who was\u00a0a close friend.\u00a0In addition to her significant contributions in New Brunswick,\u00a0Huberte\u00a0worked in several countries in Africa and Latin America. Defending the rights of women and the most disadvantaged members of society, as well as her commitment to the environment, were at the heart of her actions. What was remarkable about\u00a0Huberte\u00a0was her ability to convince many of the people she came into contact with to join her in her cause. Lorraine spoke emotionally about these women, paying tribute to their memory.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Lastly, what advice would you give to the\u202fnext\u202fgeneration\u202fof women?<\/span><\/b>\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Lorraine emphasized the importance of lifelong learning, reminding us that there is always more to know, especially from younger generations. She encouraged young people to believe in themselves, stay open to possibilities, and never underestimate their own potential.<\/span>\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n She also highlighted the value of contributing to community life, noting that when we give, others give in return. Her final reminder was simple but powerful:\u202fkeep challenging ourselves, because the effort\u00a0we\u00a0invest in life makes all the difference.<\/span>\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n A heartfelt thank\u202fyou to Lorraine for taking the time to share her insights and experiences.
